I first discovered Melissa when I read her Time Spirit Trilogy and then discovered she was a New Zealander who lived in China. Not only that, but she was a friend of a friend. I connected with her, and been a big fan of her work ever since. Her latest series is called the Songbird Series, (one of my Top 5 books) some wonderful stories about couples with music being the continuous theme throughout the books. 1st February saw the release of her latest story in the Songbird series, Troublemaker. Here, in my first guest post for 2016, Melissa talks about how music influences her writing:
I’m one of those writers who finds it impossible to write with music playing in the background. I find it so distracting. However, music has inspired many of my stories. So although I can’t do the actual typing with it playing, I have constructed many scenes in my head while listening to music.
Today, I wanted to tell you about how music has become the backbone for the Songbird Novel Collection. Music has always been an integral part of my life. I grew up with it and can’t live without it. Spotify is one of my best friends and we hang out together daily.
A few years ago, I had this idea that it’d be really fun to write a book that came with a soundtrack. Songs could be integrated into the scenes and, thanks to Spotify, readers could listen to the music while they were reading. That one idea spawned a ten-book collection that I am halfway through writing. I absolutely love working on these novels. Music adds a depth and richness to the story-telling and I feel like so many of the important scenes in the book are amplified by the use of music.
Each book has a slightly different feel and tone thanks to the music. I’ve been able to cover a wide range of genres so far and it’s a real privilege to share songs I love with the readers of these books. I’ve even written a few songs too, which has been an extra treat.
Music can stir such strong emotions within…and so can storytelling. Combining the two has made for an amazing experience as a writer, and I know many of my readers love it too.
Are you a music fan?
If you like it as much as I do, then you may enjoy the Songbird Collection. The latest book – Troublemaker – has just come out and as a way to celebrate, I’ve also put the first three novels into a box-set and it’s on sale for 99c until Feb 6th. Also – if you sign up for my newsletter, I’ll give you a free copy of Home (the 4th Songbird Novel).
