Shards of Ice is a Science Fiction piece about the head of the King’s Bodyguards and a Vigilante, and how they both have secrets that they can’t share.
Guilt is something that seems to recur a lot through the story. Vyvica feels guilty for leaving her father behind, even though he ordered her to leave without him. She wants to know her father is okay, but she doesn’t know. And she also feels guilt later on in the story.
Kelvaras feels guilt too, although much more subtle. His mother raised him with his mentally disabled sister on a neighbouring planet system. Her mother took her own life into her hands by doing so because it’s illegal to care for a disabled person. They are normally sent to live in an asylum, however his mother brought a large rural dwelling, and not only did she look after her own daughter, but children of several locals as well. Her whole effort is clandestine, so she can’t obtain funding for clothing, food and resources, so Kelvaras works to provide her with funds.
Some characters don’t carry guilt, even though they have done some rather questionable things. But you will have to read the story to find out who.
