OK, here is my dilemma, I want to write stories.  And I am.  But if I get to the point where I am published, do I go by my pen name (Catherine Mede) or by my real name???  Decisions, decisions!

So here is my reasoning behind going with my pen name:

  1.  I like my privacy.  A lot.  I value it very highly and I don’t really want lots of people banging on my door and asking for things that I am not capable of doing (NZ writers don’t necessarily make millions with their first, second or even tenth novels, I am aware of this, others aren’t!)
  2. I can always write some fiction under Catherine Mede (Speculative Fiction) and the more general literature under my own name, and only reveal later (once I am making millions(!)) like Nora Roberts / J D Robb
  3. If my writing is panned, I can deny all knowledge of who wrote it (only kidding!)

My reasons for using my own name

  1. While I do like my privacy, I guess like all writers, you also want your skills recognised.  I am pretty flip floppy on this one.  I have days where I think I want my own name on it, and other days where I think I don’t want the notoriety.
  2. There is no other reason really.

What do others think?  Do you have a pen name you want to use?  Do you use it and why?

I’d consider using a pen name for a completely practical reason: neither of my names are easy to spell, so if anyone was searching for me as an author on google, amazon, etc, they probably wouldn’t be able to find me!

      You have a lovely name!

Catherine Mede is a variation of my real name anyway, so it isn’t too much of a stretch for me.

When I started Catherine Mede a couple of years ago, I googled it, and there was no one else, now there seem to be lots of them out there… oh well…

I use a pen name, but it’s totally obvious who I am 😉 I think if you set things up right, people will likely respect your privacy if that’s what you want. NZ is a small country tho, people will find out sooner or later.

Yes people will find out, and lots of people where I live know that I write, but to have a little bit of anonymity would be nice… for a while.

When you have a name like mine, the main problem is that people can’t tell you apart from other authors of the same name. A reasonably well-known NZ writer told me recently at a book launch that she thinks of me as “the other Tim Jones”. Hmmmm….

Oh Bugger! But people probably say to the ‘other Tim Jones’ – oh, so you are the Other Tim Jones… 🙂
