When You Decide to Tidy Up Your Life - 5 April 2026

We decided to get a skip to have a big tidy up. And I wasn't expecting it to be easy getting rid of stuff.

You see, when I moved to the big smoke, I rented a shed, which kept all of my household items and other bits and pieces in because I was moving in with Mum, and waiting to get a house once I got up there. Unfortunately, we never got a place, and I kept that shed for a while.

Eventually, Mr H and I found a place, but we couldn't fit everything in, so I kept the shed, paying extra to have it.

When we moved there were sheds here, that we could rent, so I gave up the shed and moved everything out here. I did go through it periodically, and I had a couple of boxes of things to go to the op shop, but there was still a lot there that needed to go.

And Easter weekend was the perfect opportunity to do that, as Mr H and I had the long weekend off together. So we have been slowly and methodically working our way through the shed, and inside the house, getting rid of stuff that we no longer need, or want, or junk that we've accumulated.

Going through the boxes hasn't been as painful as I thought it would be, in fact, it was easier than I thought, because I must have had a good clean out before. But then I came to the china cabinet boxes. These were full of China that I have accumulated over the years, including some beautiful cups and saucers, some pieces that I inherited from my Nanna's and other bits and bobs. I knew it would be hard to part with some of the pieces, because they have sentimental value to me. But I also know that I don't need it, or want it, so I've had to make some tough choices.

But it wasn't as painful as I thought it would be. I guess that I have gotten over the sentimentality and realising that what I want around me are the things that make me happy. I've rediscovered books that I thought I'd lost, and some new books that I thought I'd gotten rid of, so I'm happy about that.

And so, why, you're thinking, would I get a skip and get rid of stuff? We're moving. Mr H and I have brought a house. We will still be living in the bustling Motropolis, but we have our own house, we will no longer have to have regular inspections, and we can have things around us that we want, and we can put our own creative touches on the place without being told that we need to take it all down when we leave.

I'm nervous and excited at the same time. But the best part, I will have my own office / library space! I can't wait to get in there and make the place my own, set my books up, my office up with my Marilyn pictures (because if you don't know I LOVE Marilyn Monroe), and have a space that is entirely mine.

Will keep you all updated with the move, which will be happening May-ish.
