October Goals 2012

It is October, where is this year going?  I swear it was only February or March a couple of months ago!

So I thought it best to update my goals before I forget (got to remember the family newsletter while I am at it).

I gave myself  break during September, though I think I said that when I wrote the September goals.  I had finished KQ&N, and I needed some space – and I also ended up with extra hours at work, so I would have been pressed for time.

So my goals for October  are:

1. Edit Ice Planet – 1/2 way through (and Finish my Ice Planet Story)! Integrating more romance into the mix.

2. Plot out and plan my paranormal romance story

3. Edit the Gothic novel (Tobias and Arabella – aka the bloody gothic novel)

4. Finish writing “Son of God”

5. Edit Medusa’s Garden.

6.  Revise and edit Medusa as a romance novel(!?!)

7. Edit “Of Kings Queens and Noblemen”.

As you can see, my goals have changed a little.  I have incorporated two into one (Ice Planet) and put in a new goal (plotting / planning new romance).  I have already been working on the romance plan, but overcomplicated the plot, so now I have taken a break from it, and will focus on Ice Planet and when I feel stressed about that, I will swap to the romance and vice versa.  Would be nice to get both completed this month, but won’t be surprised (or upset) if I don’t.

Just need to spell check KQ&N and looking for Beta readers – any takers?  I need to know ASAP.

September Goals 2012

September.

The first month of spring, daffodils showing their beautiful yellow faces, blossom is sprouting forth, tuis are chasing each other around.  A glorious time of the year.  And as it is the beginning of the month, I now have to update my goals.

I am pleased to say that I finished the edit of KQ&N – I finished it yesterday and I am happy with the results.  It is now available if anyone wants to beta read it for me.  It is a fantasy romance, from a man’s point of view.  Yip, I like doing things differently.

So my goals for September are:

1. Finish my Ice Planet Story

2. Edit Ice Planet – 1/2 way through

3. Edit the Gothic novel (Tobias and Arabella – aka the bloody gothic novel)

4. Finish writing “Son of God”

5. Edit Medusa’s Garden.

6.  Revise and edit Medusa as a romance novel(!?!)

7. Edit “Of Kings Queens and Noblemen”.

I am wondering if I need to take some time off, so I will probably put the writing of Ice  Planet over September and October, just so I have some time to me, although I did enjoy the rewrite of Medusa.  I guess I have found it hard to write the missing section of Ice Planet because I liked it the first time around.  Just serves me right for not backing up my work.  Every time I work on my laptop, I back up the work I have done.

Haven’t heard back from Entangled in Romance yet, but when I received the confirmation email, they advised that is could be up to 6 weeks.  So I am guessing, because I wasn’t notified by 31st August, that I didn’t get accepted.  And I am OK with that.

Rebranding Catherine Mede

I recently found a link through Emkay Hunter for marketing yourself as an author, called Building an Authors House.  I was intrigued and so I started going through it.

The first part was creating your foundations, creating a vision, a mission statement, developing your core values and your identity.  I enjoyed this part of the house building, because I could relate to a lot of it, and I will be putting this information up here shortly, but for now, I want to continue with the Catherine Mede Brand. (I even have a logo if anyone out there has any ideas on how to make it computer generated, would really appreciate it.)

I have also made the firm decision to be Catherine Mede when I write, because I value my privacy and I want to be able to separate my writing life from my home life.  Catherine Mede will be ideal for this.

The second part was the walls and floors.  This I have struggled with a bit and here is why. Here you focus on your customers, your products and your positioning. Hmmm.  I don’t have customers yet, but who do I want to be my customers?  What are my products going to be?  How do I want to position myself in the writing market?  These have all been extremely interesting to go through and explore and I have decided… here it is – to go into the fantasy romance genre.

why?  Because most of what I have written is fantasy, and there is an element of romance in each of them.  I can develop them further to fit into the markets I want to target.  This gives me a target audience and helps me to develop my positioning further.

I haven’t received the next part yet, but will let you know how I get on.

As far as KQ&N is concerned, I am slowly ticking through it.  Today (being Sunday in NZ, so I am writing this a day early) is the perfect rainy day for me to edit Ch10 – 12 – that will put me slightly over halfway of the editing process.  But if all goes well, I hope to get this one out to a publisher by the end of the year.

Out of Sink… I mean synch

Wow, where is the week going?  I did a middle of the week post and forgot all about my post for yesterday!  Duh!

For a week now, I have been following a healthier life style, eating, exercising etc, and feel much better for it, but I blew it last night.  Sat up late and feel very blah today – like I am out of synch with myself.  I have even managed to blow the healthier eating today, but that is OK, it is allowed.

Its not a diet, it is about eating healthier food choices and eating more protein which keeps you fuller for longer and also sates the hunger feeling, so I can go all day and not know that I haven’t snacked like I used to.  Also when I do snack now, it is on better types of food.  And the best thing is, I am eating more meat again albeit in small portions.

I have finished up to Chapter 6 in KQ&N which is great, 15k edited!  Sounds like a hell of a lot of words for the first 6 chapters – and I agree.  Definitely some chapter chopping going to happen.  I am feeling good about the story, so will keep going with it and see what happens.  I am already looking for markets for it, that it might be suitable for, being a fantasy romance!

I have found printing out the chapters works better for me, because I edit it quicker and cleaner this way.  I always reuse the paper so it doesn’t just get used once.

Anyway, since it is tea time here – not that it feels like it, I guess I better go feed the masses (all two of us!)

Plodding Along… Again

Well the end is nigh, for me, for KQ&N anyway.  What am I talking about?  The End is Nigh Challenge over at KiwiWriters.

I am the challenge host because I love this challenge, along with Evil Editors Unite, in March.  It is an opportunity for me to get some stories whipped into shape.

I have picked Of Kings Queens and Noblemen (KQ&N) because it is the second SoCNoC novel that I wrote, but I thought it sucked majorly.  When I reread it recently, I realised it wasn’t quite as bad as I originally thought, and the storyline was actually quite good.  So I have resurrected this project to try and breathe some life into it.

It is a fantasy romance, something quite outside of my realm, but after writing a romance novella about Medusa, I think I can fine tune this one better than I could have before, and therefore able to give it more justice.

It has only 21 chapters, but some are quite long so I think I will do what I did for Medusa and make the chapters only a couple of pages long, I like short sharp chapters.

So hopefully, at the end of August, I will have a novel ready for some readers.  I will let you know when I am ready for that.

In the meantime, I really need a new keyboard! This one keeps skipping letters on me.

Writing Goals – March 2012

So here is the update for the month:

1.  Edit “Of Kings Queens and Noblemen” – 1/2 way through read through.

2. Finish my Ice Planet Story

3. Edit Ice Planet – 1/2 way through

4. Edit the Gothic novel (Tobias and Arabella – aka the bloody gothic novel)

5. Finish writing “Son of God”

6. Edit Medusa’s Garden.

For Evil Editors Unite, I decided to edit Ice Planet and KQ&N, and I have managed to do some on each, but the Ice Planet has captivated me, so I have done most of my editing on this one.

While at the cafe on Friday, I couldn’t believe how many moments I laughed at the story.  And I loved that.  The two main character really make sparks fly.  She hates him, but he has the hots for her.  That is more evident as the story progresses, but I am loving the dynamics between the two of them.  Add into the mix that he is a double agent is making it very interesting.

KQ&N is a very technical book, there is a lot more going on in that one, and it really needs time to itself, so May, I think will be KQ&N month, and I have really enjoyed working on that one, but there are some gaps in the story that need to be filled or removed, and I have actually preferred to read the story rather than edit it.

I have also had a thought about SoCNoC, I don’t know if I am capable of doing that so I might do HalfNoc instead.

Evil Editors Unite

I have taken a liking to editing.  I guess it is whipping the first draft into a more user friendly state, and heavens knows my first drafts need all the whipping they can get!

As this month is Evil Editors Unite Challenge over at KiwiWriters, I have decided to go with two works, only because I really couldn’t chose between them!

Of Kings Queens and Noblemen (KQ&N) is a novel I wrote a couple of years ago during SoCNoC and trashed because I thought it was tacky.  But on further reading, it wasn’t half as bad as I thought it was.  It is based around a king who while in exile falls in love with a serving girl.  He strikes out big time with her and goes back home to reclaim his throne, but he can’t stop thinking about her.  Because there are tight restrictions on royal marriages, he abdicates his throne to find the serving girl and convince her that he is serious about her.  This is done from the King’s point of View, which is an interesting position from a female writers point of view.  I hope he is masculine enough without coming across as a sissy when he does fall in love.

The Ice Planet story is another SoCNoC novel, I wrote last year, and I was very pleased with it.

It had a strong female lead, a conflicting love interest, and espionage and intrigue, but the gutting thing is, I lost half of it when my laptop crashed.  I now have to work my way through it, find the areas that are missing, because it wasn’t just the last half of my novel, there are scenes that I added and subtracted as I was writing that need to be reinserted, reinvented and rewritten.

My goal for the month is to do a chapter a day on KQ&N and work on two chapters of Ice Planet.  KQ&N chapters are fairly long, so if I give myself a chapter a day, I have some time up my sleeve for those longer chapters.  And with Ice Planet it is a case of trying to find the scenes that need work, then writing them up.

I am looking forward to this month, I know I will do more than 20 hours editing, but I hope to achieve two stories in one go.  Wahoo, Go me!
